 Opinion: Okayyyy! So, what’s new?

The book, I felt, is a meandering mess of grand scope squandered with repetitions and so-whats. My heart bleeds to see Jim Butcher make the very same mistakes that he teaches aspiring writers against!

I understand that the scope is big, the characters are ridiculously over-powered, and the world might end, but there are sentences in the book that would have become cliches by the time you finish the book. The plot itself has so many unnecessary details and scenes just to reiterate the obvious for a Dresden files fan! What was the point of doing it? Not like anyone other than a fan would read the 17th book of a fantasy series! Would they?

The writing was of course brilliant. With the kind of legend Jim Butcher has turned into, I don’t think he could make any mistake even if he wants to. However, where I felt he could have done better is to be on point rather than trying to establish how big a bad ass each of the character was in every damn line.

And, come on! How much of a beating could Harry (the protag) take?!!! Agreed, a vulnerabilities and weakness make a protag believable and relatable. After a point it just become plain ridiculous.

This is not to say that the story doesn’t have its moments of brilliance. But that’s what they are, just moment.s

Storyline (Spoilers): After a Titan’s dick move of disrupting the peace talks (shame on you Ethniu!), the whole gang of supernatural heavyweights have to put all of their eggs in one basket to stop the titan from laying waste to Chicago. That’s all folks! Every one starting from Harry, have to make a stand against a being who is an order of magnitude bigger than Mab. When a high-voltage supernatural get-together goes sour, this book is what you get, a battle royale of the big bad uglies
